Slowness in Lichens
In 2024, I started to observe lichens more closely.
What struck me most about lichens was their ubiquity, despite their slow growth patterns. A lichen grows only 1mm every year. Despite their seemingly unhurried pace, they are resilient and offer a stark contrast to the fast-paced lives we lead. They serve as a reminder of what we can gain when we turn to ecological systems for knowledge.
The video below explores the contrast between the work I produced in a semester at RISD and how much a lichen grew in that time.
